General
What is Rock 'n' Roll Dancing?
Rock ‘n’ roll dancing is a high-energy partner dance that evolved alongside the explosion of rock ‘n’ roll music in the 1950s.
Its roots trace back to the Lindy Hop, a swing dance that emerged in the 1920s before evolving into Boogie Woogie during the 1940s to suit faster music. As rock ‘n’ roll took over in the 1950s, these dances continued to evolve, creating the exciting style we now know as Rock ‘n’ Roll.
From sock hops and dance halls to American Bandstand and jukeboxes, rock ‘n’ roll dancing became a symbol of youth, freedom and self-expression. It wasn’t just about learning steps – it was about feeling the music, having fun and making every dance your own.
Today, rock ‘n’ roll is enjoyed by people of all ages around the world. Whether you want to social dance, compete, perform or simply learn something new, it’s one of the most welcoming and enjoyable dance styles you’ll ever experience.

Do i need a partner to attend a workshop?
Not usually!
While it’s always great to bring a friend or dance partner along, you generally don’t need a partner to attend our workshops.
At most workshops, we rotate partners throughout the lesson, giving everyone the opportunity to dance, meet new people and experience dancing with different leads and follows. If you’d prefer not to rotate, that’s completely fine too – just let us know.
Some specialised workshops do require you to bring a partner. Classes involving more advanced or intensive moves such as lifts, drops, props and slides don’t rotate partners for safety, trust and consistency.
If a partner is required, we’ll always clearly state this in the workshop details before you book.
Are your workshops ok for beginners?
Yes! Most of our workshops are beginner-friendly, unless otherwise stated in the event details.
Workshops are a fantastic way to experience rock ‘n’ roll dancing and give it a go in a fun, social environment. However, because workshops can include larger groups, you won’t receive the same level of individual attention as you would in a private lesson.
If you’re completely new to dancing or want to build strong foundations from the start, we recommend booking a private lesson first. We’ll help you learn the basics at your own pace so you can walk into your next workshop feeling much more confident.

Yes.

How often do we rehearse?
Our Performance Team typically rehearses once per week.
As performances approach, additional rehearsals may be scheduled to ensure everyone is performance-ready. The closer we get to an event, the more commitment may be required.
Remember the audience only sees a few minutes on stage, but those few minutes are built from hours of preparation behind the scenes. The more committed the team is in rehearsal, the better the performance will be.

Who is eligible to join the Competition Team?
Our Competition Team is invitation-based.

If competing is one of your goals, we’d love to help you get there.
Simply complete our Competition Team Expression of Interest Form, and we’ll organise a trial lesson to assess your current level and discuss a personalised pathway into competition.
How much training is involved?
The amount of training ultimately depends on your goals.
For most competitors, we recommend:

As competitions approach, many dancers choose to increase their practice time. The more effort you’re willing to invest, the more confident and prepared you’ll be on competition day.
We provide the coaching, guidance and support but your progress is driven by the work you put in outside of lessons. The competitors who achieve the best results are the ones who consistently show up, practise and trust the process.

Is travel involved?
Yes!
Our competition team regularly travels to events throughout Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, New Zealand and beyond.
While you’re never expected to attend every competition, travelling together is one of the most rewarding parts of being on the team. It’s a fantastic opportunity to build friendships, gain experience and represent Atomic Hepcatz on some of the biggest dance floors around.
Who is eligible to join the Competition Team?
Our Competition Team is invitation-based.
Rather than holding open auditions, we identify dancers through our private lessons who demonstrate the commitment, attitude and potential to compete.
- One or more coached training session each week
- Regular practice between lessons to build consistency and confidence
As competitions approach, many dancers choose to increase their practice time. The more effort you’re willing to invest, the more confident and prepared you’ll be on competition day.
We provide the coaching, guidance and support but your progress is driven by the work you put in outside of lessons. The competitors who achieve the best results are the ones who consistently show up, practise and trust the process.
